Question About The Free Music Philosophy
June 20th, 2006Question:
Interesting concept, but I’m not sure I agree with it.
You mention that artists should be paid for derivative works, and suggest that there “should be a mechanism” to insure that they get paid, but then you don’t suggest which mechanism…
Answer:
The mechanism that I elude to is to is a new mindset for the artist - collect money from commercial sources only - e.g. film scores, commercials, beats and breaks for rap/r&b - anything deriving a significant financial backup from your work. With more concentration on this KIND of market and income, artists can give the music away for consumer use in order to build a bigger fan base and to increase exposure and brand loyalty. Through the subsequent mailing list buildup (collected from free music downloads), they now have a larger, focused list of fans in which to market to directly, instead of anonymous cd buyers and downloaders.
